Oral Minoxidil
Looking for an easy hair loss treatment? This daily Minoxidil pill stimulates hair growth by improving blood flow to the hair follicles without affecting your hormone balance. Available in 2.5 mg for men and 1.25 mg for women.
What is Oral Minoxidil?
Oral minoxidil is minoxidil in tablet form, or minoxidil pills. It contains the same active ingredient as topical minoxidil (such as Rogaine), but is taken as a pill once a day instead of applying it to the scalp.
How does Oral Minoxidil work?
Minoxidil stimulates blood flow and activates your hair follicles, allowing new hair to grow and existing ones to become stronger without affecting your hormones.
What are the most common side effects of Oral Minoxidil?
The most common side effects of Oral Minoxidil are:
- extra hair growth in unwanted areas (e.g. face/body)
- headache
- dizziness, fluid retention (e.g. ankles/legs), heart palpitations
How does Minoxidil work

Activates hair follicles - Minoxidil stimulates blood flow to your scalp and activates weakened hair follicles so that they enter the growth phase again.

Stimulates new hair growth - Minoxidil activates new hair growth within 3—6 months, especially in thinning areas like your crown.

Extends the growth phase — Minoxidil extends the growth phase of hair follicles, allowing hair to grow longer and become visibly thicker and fuller.
treatment timeline
Save it
Within 1 -2 monthsMinoxidil activates dormant hair follicles. As a result, old, weak hair often falls out first (shedding). This is normal and a good sign: the medication is working and your old hair is making way for new, stronger hair.
Slow it
Within 3 - 6 monthsYour first new hair comes through. They are often still thin and light, but especially on the crown and in thinning zones, you can see that the density is slowly increasing. And that feels good!
Show it off
After 6 monthsYour new hair will become thicker, darker and stronger. The volume increases and the scalp becomes less visible. After 9—12 months, most growth potential has been reached. But note: for best results, it is important to keep using minoxidil consistently. When you stop the treatment, the new hair will fall out again.

FAQs
Oral minoxidil is off-label, what does that mean?
Oral minoxidil is prescribed off-label for hair loss. This means that the drug is officially approved for another use (namely high blood pressure), but doctors can also prescribe it for hair loss, based on scientific research and clinical experience, if they consider it appropriate and responsible for your situation.
How long does it take for oral minoxidil to work?
You will usually notice the first effect after 3 to 6 months. The best results are often seen after 6 to 12 months, with consistent use. Sometimes additional hair loss (shedding) can occur temporarily in the first few weeks. But don't worry: this is normal and a sign that the medication is working.
How do you use oral minoxidil (dosage)?
The doctors at 3CO prescribe oral minoxidil in the following (starting) doses:
- Women: 1.25 mg per day
- Men: 2.5 mg per day
It's important to use it daily and consistently. If you stop the treatment, the results will disappear again after a few months. And that is of course a shame! Can I get oral minoxidil without a prescription?
No. Oral minoxidil is subject to prescription in the Netherlands and can only be prescribed after a medical assessment by a doctor.
What is the difference between finasteride and oral minoxidil?
Finasteride and oral minoxidil work differently:
- Finasteride lowers the hormone DHT (the main cause of hereditary hair loss in men);
- Oral minoxidil supports the hair growth cycle and can make hair thicker and stronger.
Some people choose one of the two treatments, others combine them. What suits you best depends on your situation and preference. What is the difference between topical minoxidil and oral minoxidil?
Topical minoxidil is a lotion/foam for the scalp and is available without a prescription in the Netherlands. Oral minoxidil is a tablet and is only available with a doctor's prescription. Both forms of minoxidil contain the same active ingredient.
Hereditary baldness in men: what about it?
In men, baldness is caused by hereditary predisposition in 95% of cases. This form of hair loss is genetic: if baldness occurs in your father, grandfather or other male family members, you are more likely to experience it too. The hormone DHT plays a key role here. It causes hair follicles to shrink gradually, until hair growth finally stops.
Hereditary male baldness follows a recognisable pattern, usually beginning with coves and a thinning crown. Other, less common causes of hair loss, such as illness, trauma, or long-term stress, usually show a different pattern. This difference makes it possible to properly assess whether your hair loss is consistent with hereditary baldness via a short questionnaire.
Hereditary baldness in women: what about it?
In women, hair loss is usually the result of a hereditary predisposition. This form of hair loss is partly genetic and is influenced by hormones. There are usually no bald spots, but a gradual thinning on the top of the head and a widening separation.
Factors such as pregnancy, menopause, stress, or nutritional deficiencies can enhance this process. Here, too, we can use a targeted questionnaire to assess whether your hair loss falls within this pattern.
